Retired & Traveling
Since the cold front blew through last night, the boat had switched from a/c to heat and our room was like an oven overnight! I finally got up and turned the heat down and slept better after that. The winds were gusting about 40 mph and with the current going against us (we are still headed upriver), we were late getting into port again. We had a leisurely breakfast and then I went to take a tour of the pilot house. I learned that our smokestacks can be lowered as well as the pilot house...this is in the event of going underneath bridges and especially when the river is high, as it is now. The guide told us to make sure we're outside when we leave Vicksburg tomorrow as they will definitely be lowering the stacks. Kateva couldn't climb the stairs to get up to the pilot house, so she went downstairs to read a local paper. She didn't bring warm enough clothes to endure being outside, so I left to go on the Hop on Hop off tour. I got off at the first stop, which was an antebellum house on the top cliffs of Natchez. The family that had owned the home had six children...only two of them married and they didn't have any heirs, so once the last child died, the home was taken over by the historical society. I thought it very sad that they didn't have any descendants! The home was furnished with all of their original furniture and belongings, which made it even more interesting to me. I had to wait quite a while in the bitterly cold wind for the next bus to come along and by then, I was ready to just head back to the boat. I didn't see Kateva as I entered the dining room, so I had lunch by myself. They were offering muffuletta sandwiches, which Kateva has been craving. I had one, which was so-so...nothing like what you can get in the French Quarter but still okay. I kicked around the boat and updated my blog while Kateva was chatting with other guests. They were showing the movie Secretariat so I popped in for a bit to watch. We had a reception hosted by the Aggies at 4:00 which meant more free booze so of course we were there early. :)) I'm a little tired of hearing about Aggie stuff but wine does seen to help. LOL Kateva wasn't the oldest person there--someone else was 87, but they ended up giving her a prize anyway. The youngest was William, our table mate, who is 37. There were lots of gals there my age...'54 must've been a fertile year! :)) Lamb chops were offered for dinner and were quite tasty. The wait staff on board has been extremely helpful and sweet in dealing with Kateva, who is short on patience. I was exhausted (and a bit tipsy) after dinner...so headed up to our room and got ready for bed. I made sure the heater was turned way down and we had a nice cool room for sleeping.
