Retired & Traveling
My day began really early--the pills I'm taking for my tooth issue have really wreaked havoc on my system. :(( I left our room and went downstairs to the lobby for coffee, gal working the desk was a little put out with me requesting coffee since technically the cafe didn't open until 7:00 (it was 5:30), but she caved and made me a cup. We could've upgraded our room to one w a coffee maker in it for an additional $25 per day, but I thought $50 was a bit steep for 2 cups of coffee! They served a continental breakfast and after fueling up our tanks, we took off for Bike & Roll South Beach for our Segway tour. We had to park in a garage and just as we were about to pull a ticket, a girl leaving gave us her pass. Unfortunately, the attendant caught her and we were busted. The scene became tense and Rich had me leave and go check us in for our tour. I was "concerned" the whole time we were gone that our car would be booted or towed once we got back. Our guide, Chad, was a little late, but very knowledgeable about the area and it turned out we were the only 2 on the trip! I love it when that happens. The Segways were very easy to maneuver, they responded well to just the slightest change in weight so that was one less thing to worry about since we were in the heart of traffic. We went all over the area with our guide pointing out the different architectural styles of buildings and giving us a brief lesson on the history of the city. The influence of wealth is so apparent in the size of the homes as well as the enormous yachts parked next to them!! We saw several trees with very distinctive leaves and asked Chad if he knew what they were. He said they are called Seagrapes and actually produce a grape type fruit which can be eaten once it turns purple. We found some that were ripe and plucked them off to taste. They were very good, but have a large seed in the middle which could be why their fruit is not harvested. The tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours and we were both ready to stop at that point. We headed back over to the parking garage...Rich went in alone to face the attendant and after about 10 minutes, he came out w the car. He said they wanted to make him pay $100 (our fee should've been $10), but he refused and settled on an undisclosed amount. :)) We had no idea how long it would take us to drive out to the Everglades, so we decided to wait to eat lunch until we were there. We made it in about an hour or so and got a Subway sandwich. Our group for the airboat ride consisted of us and two gals that were taking a break from work for a tour (one was from Seattle and the other from Dallas). They made the trip more fun because they were so freaked out by it all. Too funny. We 'met' a gator named Jumper, see the pictures. Once our boat turned into a canal, we could see him swimming towards us. He came right up to the boat and just hung out for about 15 minutes or so until we were ready to leave! We went to another section of the glades and saw about 8 baby gators...they were much more active than the big one and most looked about 2-3 feet long. So cool to see all of them together! After riding around some more on the airboat, our tour ended and we began the trek back to Miami. We were going to go back to the hotel and change for dinner but were just too tired, so we called Kateva and went by her place. We made a quick trip to CVS to pick up our wine for the cruise, then it was time to leave for dinner. We ate at The Rusty Pelican and had a great view of Miami from our table. We opted to sit inside due to the high winds. We went outside after dinner for a few pictures and were glad to see we had made the right decision, my hair would've beat me to death outside! We dropped Kateva off at her apt and then headed for The Vagabond. It was a FULL day!
