STATS
Departure: 8:30 AM, cdt, Grand Island, NE
Arrival: 2:30 PM, cdt, Newton, IA
Miles: 303.6 miles
Travel Time: 6 hrs. driving time
We're in Newton, Iowa.
No, this is not where the Fig Newton is grown. (Yes, they grow on fig newton trees.) It is actually the home of Sir Isaac Newton, who invented the apple. He's known for dropping it, which is really unfair, because I drop things all the time, and nobody knows me. Anyway, at the age of 4 and a half, he left home and travelled on Am-Wagon—a predecessor to Amtrak—to Blarney castle, kissed the Blarney Stone, and proceeded to tell ridiculous stories about something called gravity and how, if you trip, you fall over. Duh! Anybody knows that. If he were really that smart, he would have gone into some worthwhile field, like dentistry or real estate.
Anyway, enough of the local history. We drove today. That’s about it.

Brenda Cash Newton is also the home of Maytag Blue Cheese; and yes, that is the family of the washing machines, and the family of Fritz Maytag who is the owner of' San Francisco's Anchor Steam Brewery. Every year at the Brewery's Christmas Ale Party, among the gourmet foods presented is always Maytag Blue Cheese.
