Departure: 9:00 AM, cdt, Newton, IA
Time Change: Indiana. Ahead 1 hr
Arrival: 6:30 PM, edt, Middlebury, IN
Miles: 402.3 miles
Travel Time: 8.5 hrs. driving time
Well, we're in Middlebury, Indiana, just the other side of South Bend. Actually, for us, it’s this side of South Bend, but for you, it’s that side, unless you’re somewhere on the east coast, in which case it’s this side.
Did you get that? Neither did I.
As you may have guessed, we drove today. Nothing much to report, except for the traffic around Gary, Indiana ("…Gary Indiana, Gary Indiana, let me thay it onth again…"). There was an accident on the other (west-bound) side of I-80, and the traffic was backed up for about ten miles. Even though we weren’t directly affected, there was still a lot of traffic on our side, which was pretty harrowing. Fortunately, Barbara was driving so I could sleep. As soon as she could, she pulled off the highway, and we traded spots. While I drove, there was almost no traffic at all. Who lives right?
We figure we’ll be at the Cherry Hill RV Campground on Sunday (our actual destination). I have no idea where we’ll be tomorrow. With any luck it will be closer to Cherry Hill. We’ll let you know.

Beverly Please add Suzanne Mantell (from shall we dance) to these blogs. We really enjoy your adventures [email protected]
Kate Barry I imagine this is clearly not the highlight of your trip. I can say that cause i spent 4 lovely years in South Bend for college. Did you smell Gary before you arrived? Amazing to see the amount of pollution they allow in the air once you are outside of CA. Hope you enjoy your night in Hoosier country. When I was in college and asked what a Hoosier was I was told in the old days they used to ask you Hoosier (Whose your) momma? Hoosier your papa? Not sure whether someone was pulling my leg but never bothered to find out as there were too many beers to consume. Let me know if you find out the answer. Have fun!
Rich I had a fellow manager at HP whose last name was Newton. One time in an engineering meeting, he claimed he couldn’t figure it out, so from then on everyone called him Fig. He was never amused. You didn’t give Sir Isaac credit for inventing the load leveler, which he named after his best friend (actually his only friend) Jack who was a printer. The inspiration for a Jack came to him one day when he noticed his ink well kept sliding off his desk and making a mess on the floor. One day Jack said, “Why you don’t level the desk.” Isaac looked, and indeed one leg was shorter than the others were. Being a genius, rather than just slipping a piece of wood under the short leg, Isaac borrowed a screw device from his printer friend Jack, and leveled the desk. Unfortunately, the English Patent Office refused him a patent for his Jack device but did issue three for his laws of motion one of which says what goes up must come down.
