Where's Bartos?
Well, I just got back to London after 2 weeks in Germania. There's so many highlights, so I just mention a few below.
Booger and I arrived in Deutchland the night before the Japan game. Filled with anticipation we headed to Kaiserlautern early to moisten the vocal chords with some of Germany's finest. But when we arrived the town square was already filled with aussie green and gold and classic aussie songs were playing over a PA system. Everyone was singing along and it was a great pre-match preparation to counteract our nerves. As for the match, I'm sure you all saw Australia win which meant the next two weeks were party time!
The next few days we stayed around Mannheim and checked out some of the old towns in the area like Speyer & Heidleberg. A particular highlight was dressing in German apparel and going to the Fan Fest area on the river in Frankfurt to watch the Germany v Poland game with our German hosts. A last minute winner for Germany meant the partying went well into the night as the photos show.
What do you get when you add 5 Australians, 1 Austrian, 2 Americans and 4 Germans? The answer - The second week of Germania, otherwise known as "The Road Trip". We initially headed to Munich for the Brazil game. And by noon of game day the Marienplatz in front of the famous Glockenspiel was painted green & gold. After the game Booger, Tara & I partied with the Brazilian til the sun came up at a Mexican bar, Sosolitos.
After Munich we did some more sightseeing on the way to Nuremberg. Scene for the infamous "Corona Bus" incident. Let me elaborate. Before heading to the local Fan Fest to watch Germany's must win match against Ecuador, we all agreed we should head into the city on the S-Bahn and check out the tourist attractions. But as soon as we had left central station we spotted a lifesize blow-up Fuzzball table. Naturally we strapped ourselves in and played a game - Germany v Rest-of-the-World. Unfortunately Germany won. But we were then informed that if we bought a Corona each we would be allowed on our own double-decker Corona Bus and given a tour of the city. Talk about the gods shining on us. It was 11am, so we were thirsty, and after a strenuous fuzzball game we couldn't think of anything better. Luckily for us, the only thing happening in Nuremberg that morning seemed to be on the bus. So naturally we stayed on and did 2 laps of the city, only stopping for more Corona. And wait for it, then being dropped off at the Fan fest like VIP's. Sweet.
After Nuremberg we checked out the famously preserved walled city Rothenburg and then onto Stuttgart. Chubb and Booger had tickets to see Argentina v Holland the night before, but managed to swap their tickets at the stadium for the Croatia game. What a swap, and the boys were pumped! Stuttgart was a sea of red and white before the game which was a little intimidating. But at the game the numbers were even and the green and gold army were in fine voice. I even think the atmosphere beat the qualification game versus Uruguay in Sydney. After the final whistle all the aussie fan hung around and sung along to some classic aussie song which were played over the PA, like ACDC's 'TNT' and Men at Work's 'Down Under'. We all then filed back into the city where the partying in the street went into the wee hours.
Contenders for song of the night were:
1. You're red, you're white, you're going home tonight.
2. We don't know what you're saying
3. You're s***, but your chicks are hot
And my personal favourite:
Her husband is a tool
And when she's shagging Beckham
She thinks of Harry Kewell
Harry, Harry Kewell
Harry, Harry, Harry Kewell
But now my adventure at Germania has come to an end. Just like the Socceroos. But my stay wasn't ended by a dodgy referee's decision. Sour grapes I know...
