Morning came, never had we waited for the sun to rise. The pivotal day of the holiday had arrived, on the one side, a sunny day on Ko Perfect Paradise could lift spirits and once and once and for all banish the clouds which had seemed to follow our every mood, or on the flip side, more rain could actually begin to make us miss....... British weather!!
Unfortunately for you guys and fortunately for us, it was an absolute scorcher, the type of weather that would make you want to especially fly here for. Getting on the boat from Phuket to Ko Phi Phi, lying in the sun on the upper deck hoping to darken the already relatively dark British Asian skin our smiles broadened. The journey was accompanied by beautiful scenery, many islands peppering the sun kissed horizons on an otherwise open landscape. However, in a move that so typifies British tourists, we thought we'd leave the suncream for later to make up for lost time- schoolboy error which inevitably would have repurcussions later on.
After quickly finding somewhere to stay, first stop was the beach. And what a beach it was. Clear waters, golden sand and lush green hillsides which stretched out into the sea clearly resembled a postcard. Hours passed without us realising! As its quite a small island, its the type of place where you can quickly get to know people, as we found out when we had a fruit shake from this guy at a stall. Then, a couple of hours later we came back for another one. The nicest fruit shakes freshly made for under a quid, the perfect accompaniment to a few hours on the beach. Just before sunset, we made our way (climbing up endless steep stairs) to the island viewpoint, which gave the perfect view of the island and the two main bays which were in fact really close together.
The nightlife on Phi Phi was pretty lively too, home comforts such as an Irish bar and numerous other watering holes with big screens showing footy adding to the restaurants and cafes along the main streets. One of the main bars was jokes, they had a boxing ring in the middle of it, allowing people to give it a go for a free mixer bucket. Interspersed between the drunken fights and hilarious wannabe boxers (the sight of a drunken fat guy trying to fly kick someone is undescribable), were a few thai fights- which although didnt seem completely authentic or unrehearsed, still provided great entertainment. For some reason, they also gave out free buckets to everyone at midnight, of what we werent quite sure but most probably dirty homemade vodka and not much else!
Although the rain came back the next morning, it didnt last long, luckily! With time against us, we booked a sunset tour to see as many of the island as we could. Time for a massage me thinks. Long overdue, the aching limbs and weighed down shoulders deserved some r&r. Completely relaxing, although the woman kept saying how tense i was and laughing at my inability to relax! Although i had to agree, my legs were weirdly tense and prone to inopportune spasms and strains. Bit of advice if needed, two ways to impress Thai women and nice hands (Mehul) and hairy legs (Baiju) lol, could see the looks of envy on their faces in awe of our attractive features! After performing some wrestling moves in between and struggling with our names (she went from pronounicng baiju as monkey in the space of about 2 seconds!). Feeling refreshed, and slighly disorientated after the massage, we went on the sunset tour. Main highlights were seeing Maya Bay (the place where 'The Beach' is set) and kayaking into lagoons and bays. Didnt quite manage to master snorkelling though, water sneaking through into the goggles wasnt the best way to look at the fish and coral under the sea.
We could have easily spent longer here, Ko Phi Phi really is as amazing as people say it is just because theres so much to do. The mixture of beaches, islands, scenery as well as the bars and people provide something for everyone, especially two sunburnt backpackers.
