So a week in Cartagena to end the trip in both South America and Colombia and it definitely didn't disappoint!
The city is beautiful, it has a huge old town district, surrounded by fortress walls and inside all of the colonial buildings are now really cool hostels, shops, bars and restaurants! Definitely the nicest looking city we have been to in South America.
The first few days were Enya's last with us before heading home so we wanted to make the most of them! We took a trip to a famous 'mud bath volcano' which was a giant hill with hot mud inside. You climb up the sides and into the 'volcano' down huge ladders, the mud is so thick that you effectively float, even standing upright! A bit of a strange experience but locals then massage you whilst floating you around in the mud bath and then wash you off outside!
On Enya's final night we went out on the town, bought a few expensive jugs of sangria and hung out in a fancy sunset watching spot on top of the fortress wall and ended the night in a roof top club! Definitely flash packing for the night!
We broke the week up with a few days at Playa Blanca, about 45 mins from the city but couldn't have been further from city life! We were told it was touristy but half of the beach (which must have been miles long) was really just backpackers. Cool shack style huts on the beach, no running water, showers or electricity (only electricity at night for a few hours), but it all added to the experience!
The beach was amazing, white sand, palm trees and unbelievable water with all different shades of blue, definitely some of the best we'd seen in South America so far!
The days were spent lazing around the beach, a trip out snorkelling to an exclusive set of islands off shore and chilling around the beach restaurants. We did attempt a boat trip in crazily rough sea at night to see some glowing sea plankton but it wasn't to be... Apparently because there was a full moon!!
For the final weekend we headed back to the city, found a great little hotel with decent beds, showers, wifi and air con (everything you need after Playa Blanca!) and set up for Sonny's last weekend with us before he headed home!
On the Friday we went to the World famous Havana club playing really cool jazz and blues music and the Saturday we just mooched around local bars and restaurants. During the days we did a self planned walking tour of the city as the 'official one' was over 4 hours long!
The weekend ended with us sad to see Sonny go and especially sad to leave Colombia and South America behind... But full of excitement for Central America and more importantly the 6 day sailing trip up to Central America via the tropical paradise islands of San Blas!! What made it even more exciting was our captain we met on the pre-sailing Sunday meeting, quite literally he looked like a pirate and definitely knew his stuff!!
In South America, the last 6 months have been amazing in every way, we've seen some of the most amazing things and met great people all along the way!! However Central America awaits... Onward bound!!
