New jeans, flashlights. Sweaters, sleeping bag and Australian souvenirs. Our last stop on an amazing continent. We were more preparing for our road trip in new Zealand than we were with our heads in Melbourne.
Wait..... That's not entirely true and truth be told we were only planning our route in new Zealand and hour or so. We came from the bus at 6 in the morning from adelaide. It was an overnight one of 10 hours. No sleep Ofcourse but we figured it was low season our beds must be ready when we check in. No chance, we had to wait till 14:00 before we could go to bed. From 7 to 3 we walked around, fuzzy and sleepy. There were balloons in the sky with baskets full of people making their way through the skyscrapers. The tram around the city was for free and they had a German beerfest in the townhall. Penguins were walking at the pier. The market was open 5 days a week, the museum had real dinosaurs. The library had free high speed Internet access and a range of consoles. And believe it or not, a pay as you feel vegetarian restaurant. I surely must be dreaming. Sophisticated Melbourne, hipster paradise.
So we acted like hipsters for a weekend. Going to the library to play xbox and surf the Web. Going to the museum to see dinosaurs and insects. And all doing this by tram Ofcourse. To sleep in a room with 12 people was hilarious. There was this guy called Brandon and he liked to smoke. He was stoned of his ass when we met him and to him everything was a joke. He was talking to his mother when he had to laugh so hard that he couldn't talk to her no more. He gave the phone to me, if I could explain her where the hostel was located. After that he tried to sell his tracking pants to me because he had no money. All the time smoking in the room but he kept forgetting that it wasn't allowed. We were afraid that our room would burn down if we left. The real hipster expierence in Melbourne must have been the vegetarian restaurant though.
Lentil as anything. Located in Abbotsford a 2 hours walk from our hostel but worth every minute. When dave told us about this restaurant we were expecting something worse then a school cafeteria but it turned out to be pristine. They used an old chapel as their base inside a monastery. Outside were benches and picknick tables were you could sit. Inside was a buffet with 10 different dishes from starter to dessert all vegetarian or even vegan. Now you probably think that they only have dull dishes with only onions and potatoes but it is quite the opposite. All of them burst of flavour that even a meat eater can appreciate. After you've filled your belly you can wash it down with fresh coffee and listen to the live performance of a band that is playing every night. The idea of Lentil as anything is that everyone can join the table no matter what your financial situation is. So you see all kinds of people eating, enjoying and talking to each other. Us as well.
I wrote this while in Queenstown new Zealand. It has been raining non stop unfortunately. The 9th we will be back in Christchurch! On our way to Fiji!
