Sunrise over Uluru and a walk at Kata Tjuta
Although we had slept little, we were all wide awake eating toast and cereal at 4.30am and off in our tour bus ( number plate mobilcan) in plenty of time to walk up a large sand dune near Kata Tjuta to see the sun rise over Uluru. Again it was a beautiful sight and truly spectacular.
Once we had taken our photos, we drove to the start of our 8km walk through the valley of the winds (aptly named). The first part was a mix of level, climb and rocky descent to the start of the circular walk. This was a similar rough track with a gentle ascent until the section up to Karingana Lookout which was at times more like rock climbing. It was worth it though as the view from the top was tremendous looking over the smaller rock formations and the outback beyond. From the lookout it was downhill but steep in places to where the circular walk began, then over the first section again back to the tour bus and camp to pack our swags and move on to King's Canyon.
It was a three hour drive to King's Canyon Ranch and our home for the night, picking up fire wood for the night's camp fire on the way. On arrival we had a very welcome quick swim in the pool and shower while Locky cooked, partly on the open fire including baking herb bread (called damper) and barbecuing, including kangaroo (which actually tasted good).
It was early to swag again as Friday would be another 04.30 start for the King's Canyon walk.
