Arrived back in Rome after a couple of hours stop in Sienna, home of the Palio horse race. This is a bareback horse race with a field of 10. They cover part of the main square with clay to make a track and the field goes "hell for leather" around the circuit 3 times. The race had been held the day before we were there and we saw the winning horse, jockey and half the town parading with banners, lots of drumming and blowing of whistles.
Had our final dinner that night at the Marriott, which was nice but very rushed.
Our hotel was quite a way out of town, near the airport, so the next morning caught the shuttle into the city centre and jumped on a hop on hop off bus and to see the sights we had not seen. The Trevi Fountain, minus water, being renovated, The Pantheon, lunch at Navona Piazza, pizza and pasta again, then walked to The Capitole building. Time for a gelato and back to the hotel on the shuttle.
I thought we were going to have a nice restful day for our last in Rome and flying out at 12 midnight. After a leisurely breakfast, decided I would re-pack our cases. Don't know what made me check our flight time, but panicked when I saw it was 12 midday. By this time it was 10am. Things got thrown in, down stairs and into a taxi by 10.15. At the airport at 10.30. Ran to check-in and was told the flight had been delayed by 2 hours. Finally left Rome 4hours late. Needed a drink.
