Kristina and I went paragliding in the Sacred Valley earlier today. Our take-off point was at a viewpoint near Chinchera, at approx 3,600m / 11,800 ft, and we flew for about 20 mins down into the Sacred Valley, about 1,000m / 3,300 ft descent to the middle of some corn fields between Yukay and Huayllabamba. We enjoyed some beautiful views of the valleys, and surrounding mountains and glaciers during the flight, and taking in the farming community at work in the fields just before we landed. We were slightly off course, as Jose (the pilot) could not quite gauge the direction of the wind, and we startled a herd of sheep in the field - they stared as we came down towards them, and in a panic they all huddled straight in our path, and about 20 ft before impact, they scattered into the trees! It was the most comical sight! We ourselves had a soft landing on our butts (the harness came with a huge padded cushion) about 10 ft short of the trees (saplings, really) - I did not think to panic, but I think Jose was probably a little apprehensive, as he jammed his feet against the ground when we landed to apply the brakes so we would avoid ramming into the little trees.
