We were not so lucky the next day when we went on a tour to Chiloe Island - it reverted to its typical wet, grey and cold weather. It was an interesting trip - Chiloe had historically been (and still is) isolated from the rest of the country, and was the last part of the country to accept Chilean independence (many years after the rest of the country had been liberated from Spain); it has its own unique cultural traditions and cuisine; and the Chilotans have more indigenous facial features than the mainland Chileans. Because of the miserable weather apparently, this place has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
We spotted a few sealions and dolphins on our ferry ride across to the island. The highlight was our boat trip to see the penguins on the north-western part of the island - it was cold and wet, and we were grateful for our extra layers of clothing and wetproof gear! Not only did we see both the Humboldt and Magellan penguins, but also a few otters feasting on their catches, turning around to float on their backs as they busily munched on their crabs. Also saw different varieties of cormorants, as well as sea lions.
