Day One Hundred Fifty-Eight June 12
Heavy rains greeted the ship today as we arrived in Gijon, Spain on this Sunday morning. Apart from restaurants, only a few shops were opened but these shops would close for afternoon siesta.
A shuttle bus service operated from the port would be our mode of transportation into the city. The rain had stopped for a while which we were grateful for as it's never fun to explore a new city in the rain.
The drop off point allowed a view of a harbor with all types of boats moored. Our friend Earl was by himself today as his wife was in isolation for possible Covid so the three of us explored the city together.
One item of interest was a tall circular figure made of green wine bottles turned upside down.
Narrow passageways, cobblestone streets and ornate style buildings could be found within the city.
The church of San Pedro is located right by the ocean and if the tide is in waves can be seen crashing against the sea wall, which we saw later in the afternoon. The three of us tried to visit the church however Sunday service was being performed so we quietly made our way out.
All three of us were a little bit peckish so it was back to the city to find a place for lunch before we walked Earl back to the shuttle bus.
Janice and I wanted to walk some more so it is back to the seafront. By now the tide has come in and what looked like a long sandy beach before has now been replaced by sea water. You need to be very aware of when the tide is coming back in. Many of the beach goers are using the walkways down to the beach to leave their belongings and towels before going for a swim.
The seafront is not typical of say UK, Canadian or American seafronts as we did not see any tacky looking shops. It was a very nice walk along the ocean.
With time constraints it was back to the ship, no Trivia today. There is a seaday tomorrow as we make our way to Lisbon 513 miles away.
