Day Twenty Two January 27
Another beautiful sunny day awaited us on the island of Rangiroa which is part of the Tuamotus Islands with possible scattered thunderstorms and temperatures of 87F or 29C.
The ship needed to sail a narrow channel before anchoring in the harbour.
Like most South Pacific islands Rangiroa is basically at sea level and you wonder how global warming will affect these places in the future. In some cases, the sea temperature is the same or maybe even warmer than the air temperature.
At this port we booked a 5 hour non ship snorkeling tour. We spent a relaxed day with others from the ship and were treated to a fish lunch. Other water activities included the use of single person kayaks which Janice and I both used. The fish were not plentiful even in the reefs which was disappointing. Unfortunately like many places around the world, the coral has been damaged so there are not as many fish as there used to be. There is also overfishing here as well. But the clear waters with its many shades of blue made up for it.
