Day One Hundred Thirty-Four - May 19
This will be our final day in Copenhagen and the weather does not want to cooperate. It is cloudy with the potential of rain therefore a raincoat is in order.
Our daily ship newspaper talks about Queen Margrethe of Denmark who succeeded her father, King Frederik IX in January 1972. The Queen is the second longest serving royal in history only behind Queen Elizabeth II who will be celebrating her Platinum Anniversary in June of this year.
There were a few things I wanted to see on the last day, but one was to find a real Danish pastry. Sadly, this did not happen.
While on the bus last evening we passed yellow row houses that were built by the Danish King in 1641 for the Royal Danish Navy. The houses were built for navy families of the time, but today's navy personnel can still live here should they choose. Having some idea where they were I left the shuttle bus in search of the row houses. The cobblestone streets remain with similar style shutters found on the houses.
While walking back, I come across the Marble Church with its green circular roof near Marmorkirken Metro station. The outside has four large marble columns located at the entrance. You can find many statues surrounding the church as well as statues appearing on the top of the church.
The rain is starting when I make my way through Amalienborg Palace again. I am just amazed that Danish citizens as well as tourists can just walk through with no security in sight.
Continuing to use the boardwalk I can see the new Opera House across the harbour. Again, I am back on Gammel Strand and see the Army Guards pass on their way to the changing of the guards at Amalienborg Palace.
The next port of call is Lubeck (Travemunde) Germany 135 nautical miles away.
Although somewhat hazing, we can see the Oresund Bridge, the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe while cruising towards Germany.
