Day One Hundred Thirty-Three - May 18
I am still without my best friend and buddy, Janice. Today I will explore with Keith and Ilona. The weather suggested highs of 16C or 61F so wearing pants would be prudent for the second day in Copenhagen.
The NCL Getaway is still in port and we are joined by P&O Britannia now. these two ships make the INsignia look like a private yacht. Taking an early shuttle we make our way to the drop off point and my search for a bowtie to wear for tonight's Around The World Event (ATW) at the National Aquarium. More to follow but a bowtie was secured.
The first stop was to the Thorvaldsen Museum which was free to the public today. The museum is dedicated to Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) who spent most of his adult life in Rome but amassed hundreds of marble and plaster statues which appear in the museum.
Another building sitting on the Christiansborg Palace complex is The Tower which we went to visit. To reach the top of the tower we needed to take two elevators. After the second elevator you reach the Lumber Room containing six male statues that act as guards for the room. You then climb the staircase to reach the viewing area from here wheere you can see in all four directions.
Before we left the area we also went to thee Copanhagen City Hall.
Before we left the areawe also went to the Copenhagen City Hall where we found Jen Olsen's World Clock. He was part of the beginning of the clock's construction in 1945 however died before its completion ten years later. The three-piece unit is held in a sealed display case. The information board suggests that the clock consists of twelve movements with 15,448 parts. It is wound manually once a week. The fastest gear completes a revolution is 10 seconds and the slowest every 25,753 years. Check it out, I am not kidding on this!
Returning to the ground we continue walking before finding a small quaint café for lunch. I would also like to find the Gammel Strand again to take photos from the bridge looking down the canal as opposed to the photos taken yesterday from one side of the canal.
We need to leave the city centre early as the ATW event is scheduled this evening. I will be solo tonight as several other passengers will be doing.
The National Aquarium of Denmark will be the host of our first ATW event. The aquarium is considered the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. As one passenger commented, it looks like a super spreader as we are all crammed into a small area for a talk on the aquarium before we walked through the tropical rain forest section. Since the ship was tested yesterday, hopefully, we were all Covid free.
Quickly walking through the rain forest, we pass through a tunnel where you could see many types of fish swimming above you.
A visit to the huge ocean tank (4 million liters) is next before we find a table for dinner. In the ocean tank we are treated to a female deep diver dressed as a mermaid swimming within the tank and the fish.
This being an aquarium dinner the appetizers included scallops (I ate one of the three), crabmeat ravioli (sorry I passed on this as well) and then the main dish of prime rib followed by strawberry chocolate tart.
Before we even finished our dessert an announcement was made that anyone finished should make their way to the buses.
It is too bad but the aquarium looked very interesting but there was no additional time to explore it.
