Just as Captain Jereon Beijins predicted at 7am the ship was at anchor in Kodiak harbour, not being able to dock because of the presence of the ferry. Firstly we had a most efficient face to face with US Border Protection Officers who happily stamped our passorts.
After lunch we had a very expensive boat ride on a working fishing boat under the guise of Marine and Wildlife Sightseeing. It was run by two ex and one serving Coast Guard personnel and true to their word we saw a lot of wild life. But it rained all afternoon. As one guide said to me we had the true Kodiak experience- ranging through sunny, blustery (25kt) , cold (7 degree) and rainy afternoon and one metre chop. Though we had too many passengers for the seating it was a safe boat and a good crew. I had a great afternoon because I mostly stood under the back awning chatting with the guides so I saw everything even the elusive puffin. We were too early in the season for most of the wildlife, the bears were still hibernating.
