Our first day in Melbourne was a bit of a haze, we were shattered from the long flight and lack of sleep so as the sun was shining we decided to find a nice big tree in a nearby park and lay under it for the afternoon. The park was deserted and it was so peaceful, accept from the odd sniff from a passing dog now and again. The rest of the day was a pretty lazy one, we found an awesome pancake restaurant, had dinner and settled for the night. The next day was spent doing laundry, sending home post (mostly my handbags!!! ha ha ) and getting our underwater photos developed (they were not the best photos as you can imagine!) we ended up with about 5 good photos out of 27!
For lunch we found a great Italian and managed to save the leftover pizza for dinner, combined with super noodles! Yummy! - Not. I have since learnt that pizza and microwaves are a no no!
We booked ourselves on a Great Ocean Road Trip departing early the next morning so it was a mug of Milo and an early night. Alarms set for 6:30am - Ouch!
7am and I barely awake to find the suns shining and the alarm hasn't gone off!? Darn it we overslept! Bus was due at 7:20am so 'on the go' breakfast it was! Damien was our tour guide and driver for the day and once all the pick ups were done we were off. First stop was Bell's Beach, just past a small town called Torquay, Damien had a very interesting and quite humorous range of music for the journey which kept us all amused. Next stop was a small camping site which had wild Koala and parrots to look at and feed. Ash kept his distance after his last experience so I was left to feed the birds, much to his amusement I was suddenly perched on from every angle, luckily there was no poo involved but I did come away with some nasty scratches! Next it was off to Maits Rest Rainforest for a short walk and then a fish and chips lunch! Can you believe they didn't do pickled eggs or mushy peas! The afternoon we went to The Tweleve Apostles, The Loch Ard Gorge (where I was unexpectedly drenched by a massive wave and had to spend the rest of the day wet through - to which that night i had dreams that we were in a Tsunami - dramas!) and London Bridge, which Damien told us a very funny story about. It was a long drive back to Melbourne so we stopped off for some dinner at some dodgy outlet of fast food joints. We arrived back into Melbourne at around 10pm and by then the city was lit up with its nightlife providing some great views along the way.
The next day we went into Melbourne City Centre, they have a free tram that goes just about anywhere in the city so we decided to hop on and explore. We had a look around Federation Square, the Cathedral and some beautiful gardens before heading to The Old Gaol (Prison). We had a tour around the cells by a prison guard who played her part well, Ash got picked out to be the prisoner - it was quite funny watching him get shouted at!
Tonight we had to book ourselves into a new hostel as the guest house we were staying at was full due to a Metallica concert in the city. After hours of searching it turned out that because of the concert all hostels and hotels were booked up accept one - Nomads. As we arrive at the hostel it looked ok, we checked in and headed up to our room, it was on the top floor and right at the other end of the building. We opened the dorm room to be greeted by the smell of burgers, beer and smelly socks! The place was a tip, you could hardly see the floor and there was no linen on the beds. The tattooed gent sat on his bed munching on his burger muttered something under his breath, I swear he said 'welcome to the hole'. I stood there and froze, I was certain at that point I was not going to be staying in that room! Back down to reception we go. It turns out the guy was practically living there and was proving quite troublesome. Off we go to find somewhere else to stay... we got to a nearby coach station and found that a coach to Sydney was leaving in just under an hour - fully booked. So off we went to find some internet access to try and find a hotel out of town. That we did but at a cost! We stayed in a place called Dandenong, not your usual tourist area, after being told not to go out at night our stay was a short one.
The following day we moved on to St Kilda, a much more touristy area with beaches and a lively town. We spent the next two days soaking up the sun on the beach and walking around St Kilda. We met 2 slightly intoxicated Ozzy girls who were fascinated by our accents and kept trying to mimic us, one of them was obsessed with the word 'b*ll*cks'. They directed us to a great $15 steak restaurant which is where we spent our evening.
Next stop - Sydney
