After our overnight bus we arrived in Airlie Beach keen to get to our hotel and dump our bags, but not before stopping off at Maccy D's for a brekkie! Once checked in we ventured off to find the check in point for our sailing trip the following day. After the third attempt we found the right travel agent shop and once booked in we spent the rest of afternoon chilling out at the lagoon watching the would go by. That evening we ate at a nearby, not very nice, Thai restaurant and got an early night to prepare ourselves for our 2 day sailing trip to the Whitsundays.
The boat wasn't leaving until 4pm, so we took our time and went for a good old English Breakfast to fill our tums for the busy day ahead, shopped for snacks and alcohol for our trip and had a stroll down to the marina. 4pm quickly came and once we met the rest of our group on the trip, Luke & Isabella (the boat owners) showed us around the boat and our luxurious double room and off we went. It was quite a windy day and it wasn't long before we were in choppy waters, not good if u have sea sickness! An hour later and I was as white as a ghost - oh dear, not again! For me the rest of the evening was spent being sick and sleeping :( Ash on the other hand enjoyed a chicken pasta dinner with the others, with beer and card games.
Morning came and luckily I felt much better, so I made sure I stocked up on water and anti-sickness tablets! We started the morning sailing to White Haven beach, situated on the main Whitsunday Island. To get there we had to hop on a small dingy which took us to shore, on we hopped, fine, no dramas, but getting off was another storey... simple, you put one leg out the boat followed by the other, right? Well not for clumsy old me, one leg out and SPLASH! Bloody overboard and drenched from head to toe, fully clothed may i add and a mouth full of saltwater - yuck! Only I could get that wrong! Im beginning to think im not cut out for all this outdoor malarky! It was funny though ha ha... after a short walk through the rainforest we arrived at the beautiful white sandy beach! We then took a walk to the lookout where we got some great photos.
Back on the boat and our next stop was just at the other side of the island where we tried paddle boarding. We paddle boarded about 3km and Ash managed to stand the whole way! I on the other-hand opted to stay on my knees after attempting to stand once and falling into the sea panicking that I was going to be lunch for a hungry shark!
After a delicious lunch cooked by Isabella we did a spot of snorkelling before finding a nice calm bay to spend the evening.
The following morning we went to a coral reef to do some more snorkelling and tried out a few of Lukes water sport toys, including a james bond style handheld rocket-like motor that you hold onto and it glides you through the water which Ash loved. The coral and marine life were beautiful and one of the girls had an under water camera so we managed to get some awesome photos. The journey back to Airlie was, again, a rocky one, so after 3 hours we were glad to be on still land.
Next stop... Cairns
