We arrived in Wanaka in the afternoon and Ash still wasn't feeling too great so we chilled out on the campsite which was situated on Lake Wanaka so we had some lovely views from our campervan.
The next day we drove on to Fox Glacier via The Mt Aspiring National Park and Haast. The National Park was beautiful and was like driving through something out of Jurassic Park, the roads were narrow and windy with huge trees hugging the roads, and every now and again there was snow. We stopped to see Thunder Falls, a beautiful waterfall, but got into a bit of a pickle when we thought we had locked ourselves out of the van! In the middle of no-where with hardly anyone around our faces dropped as we could see the keys still sitting in the ignition! That was until I went round the back and found that the back door was unlocked! (I had previously asked Ash to lock it so good job he wasn't feeling to well and didn't hear me). What a relief!
That evening we treated ourselves to a cabin for a couple of nights as we thought it would be warmer especially as they had heated electric blankets ahhhh.... well, we thought wrong, it was blo*dy freezing! We woke up with condensation all up the walls dropping all over our clothes and belongings, so for the second night, out came the portable heater from good old Jucy Lucy! :)
The following day we did a walk to the Fox Glacier. We had a guide called Ruth and as we were the only ones booked on to the tour we got a good personal service and she told us all about the glacier, how it was formed and showed us the rock formations from the continuously moving Fox Glacier.
The next morning we packed up and went to see Lake Matheson, just around the corner from Fox Glacier, we are so glad we did because it was true beauty at its best! The famous reflection of the mountains in the lake were gleaming and it was breath taking to see. We then set off for Punakaiki to see the Pancake Rocks, where there was a short walk which looped around the coast. The walk was really interesting and was like being in 'Honey I Shrunk The Kids' as the trees and shrubs were sooo high you couldn't see past them. The Pancake Rocks were very impressive and did actually look like stacks of pancakes!
From there we drove on to Murchison, it was late when we arrived and only 1 place to eat and no-where to buy anything decent to cook, so we decided to take our chances and eat out, it was okish but a very weird and almost eery place with nothing nice to see. So in the morning we headed to Nelson. To be honest there was not much there either, some good beaches apparently and a good National Park nearby but as its winter its a tad bit cold for that. So we opted for the Cinema where we watched Transformers 3 and ate popcorn! :)
The next morning we set off for Picton where we caught a ferry over to Wellington to start our next part of our adventure in the Northern Island of New Zealand. The crossing was pretty rough and yet again I spent the journey with my head in a sick bag :( even Ash felt the motion sickness and disappeared into the Mens loo's for a good 30 mins. No more boats pleeease!
Overal we loved the South Island (the Southern part of the South more so) and would definitely return back to Queenstown on holiday. Lets see what the North brings us! Hopefully more sunshine and not so much snow!
