When we arrived in Te Anau it was raining quite hard so we took the time to find out about what was on offer and went into town for a walk around, the streets were almost deserted and it was clear that this was not the greatest time of year to be visiting this part of NZ. One thing we did want to do was the Glowworm Caves, so we booked up to go the following day, that night we chilled in the campervan and watched a DVD hired from the campsite. During the night Ash was woken by water dripping on his face from the roof! It appears the rain had pushed Jucy Lucy to the test and discovered she had a leak! So the next morning, and a wetter Ash, we took to her to the garage where she was patched up! The Glowworm Caves were absolutely magical, we had to take a short boat trip, in the snow may I add, to Waitimo Caves where we were then told about the glowworms and other facts about the Takahe bird which is endangered and lives near the caves. We had the chance to drink from the fresh springs in the caves and it tasted so pure. The gushing water was really loud until we got deep into the caves where everyone had to be silent while we all boarded a little rowing boat. It was then that the lights were turned off and we were in pitch black! The guide led us through the darkness and soon we were surrounded by a blanket of little glowing lights, at times we were about a foot away from the glowworms it was incredible to see. There was a strict no photography rule in the caves so I have found a picture on google for you to see what it was like.
The next day we had booked to go Milford Sound, however due to bad weather the trip was not running and it was apparent that they would be running any time soon. We were quite disappointed as it was highly recommended, so maybe on another visit! :)
As we are on a tight schedule we decided to leave Te Anau and head for Queenstown. We took the scenic route and my are we glad we did, it was truly amazing! (see pictures) When we arrived into Queenstown we had a good feeling about the place, not only because it was surrounded by snowy mountains, fir trees and a lake but because it had such a good vibe. Everywhere you looked people where fresh off the mountains, snowboards and skis in tow and in general everyone looked happy! The first stop had to be the famous Fergburger. Huge freshly made burgers with just about any topping you could imagine, and they certainly lived up to expectation! The town itself was buzzing but cosy and every window you passed had a teasing log fire blazing away just tempting you to go in, a simply perfect winter town, but alongside that plenty of adventure which we were about to discover over the next few days.
The next day was a 7am start as we were going Snowboarding at The Remarkables resort! The queues for the bus were manic so we were glad we took the advice to leave early! I did a beginners day and Ash did a novice day as he has been Snowboarding before. We both had a fab morning learning on slopes and I even managed to stand up and board right to the bottom, before using a fence at the end to stop myself, ha ha, got a bit excited! The afternoon wasn't so fun, well for me anyway. After falling a*s over t*t off the beginners carpet lift (dont ask me how) I ended up in First Aid with a torn spinal muscle! Ouch! Ash did well though and went on bigger slopes for a few good runs and managed to get a bit of himself in action with the new video recorder he bought.
The next day we went into town had lunch in a lovely little french cafe before booking Ash in for Nevis Bungy for the following day! That afternoon we went on the Skyline Gondola. At the top we got great views over the town, mountains and lake while sipping hot chocolate and a latte for Ash. We ordered in Hell's Pizza that night and talked about Ash's up coming bungy jump!!!
Morning came and so did the time for Ash to do his Jump! We got on the Bungy bus and began our journey to Nevis! On the way we stopped at the Bridge Bungy to drop some people off, it was then that the bad news came, Nevis was 3 times higher!!! With Ash looking slightly paler than before we took the windy road to the top of the mountain where we were greeted by the Nevis Bungy! We all got harnessed up and had to go across a zip wire in a pod to get to the Bungy platform. For me that was enough and it confirmed the fact that I was no way throwing myself off a 134m high platform. It wasn't long before Ash was harnessed up and ready to go and by this time wondering why he had ever agreed to do it! 3 2 1 BUNGY!!! You can see the video on the link below.
When we returned from the Bungy we were both buzzing and went straight in and booked ourselves in for our next adventure - Heli Rafting! That night we had a walk along the Wharf and stopped for a glass of mulled wine whilst reminiscing on Ash's Bungy Jump.
Heli Rafting was sooo much fun, we were picked up by a Helicopter and taken up the mountains along Shootover River where we white water rafted back down to base - the adrenalin was wicked even though our toes and fingers frozen! Waiting for us was a sauna, our saviour and then back to warm up in the campervan.
We really didn't want to leave Queenstown, it's so friendly and packed full of fun but were running out of time so had to move on!!!
Enroute to Fox Glacier via Wanaka.
