Another eventful bus ride from Nha Trang to Hoi An although thankfully no sick note! On boarding the sleeper bus the driver was really rude and thrusted a plastic bag at us which we initially thought was a sick bag but later discovered after more aggressive shouting and pointing and grabbing (almost tripping of legs) that it was for our shoes. Unfortunately this was a sign of things to come as we managed to get little sleep as the driver drove as aggressively as he spoke!
On arrival in Hoi An we wandered the streets looking for guesthouses until eventually we found a spot. After catching up on some sleep we headed out into the town which looked very different from the scene earlier that day. The old town of Hoi An is a UNESCO world heritsge site and so all the buidlings are preserved to what they were like before the war. Although the walls are chipped and stained the place oozes with character especially amongst the lanterns the locals hang up outside their shops.
Now anyone thats been to Hoi An will know that the main thing here is tailors, tailors, and even more tailors offering to fit you with anything from a brand new suit to a full on ball gown. Both me and Ash are ones to do our research so we spent the whole of the first day going in some shops enquiring about fabrics, turn around times etc.. The following day (and thanks to trip advisor) we decided to go with Kimmys tailors, a reasonably big establishment that seemed thorough in their tailoring process. We spent hours deliberating over design, material, lining, the works but it was great fun and by the end of the second day we were happy with our choices and eagerly awaiting our first fitting the following day. That evening we met some sound guys from Liverpool and spend the evening playing cards over a few drinks and good chat.
The girls from the tailors were really accomodating during our 4 fittings and even changed the buttons on my suit as the first ones were the wrong colour. Nothing was too much trouble and the girls altered anything you wanted to suit. A must do in Hoi An!
Not only did Hoi An have lots of tailors to choose from but the food there was great. Loads of choice between small little cafes to more posh establishments. We stuck to the local places and sampled some of the local cuisine including white rose, cao lao and fried wontons.
