We had an amazing sleep on our first night in Peru and felt ready and raring to go on the Sunday morning to explore! The sun was shining and when we got dropped off at the Plaza Des Armes, we were more than impressed with what we saw. Arequipa is the second biggest city within Peru and is known as the white city as many of the buildings are built of sillar, a pearly whie volcanic rock; this is what makes the place so beautiful. We spent some time wandering around the square, admiring the impressive catherdral and people watching. it was really busy with people and pigeons, locals sold bags of seed which young children loved to throw around and attract the birds around the fountain. We had also been looking forward to trying the notorious¨'Inca Kola' and so on our way to museum.
For only 15 soles (less than 3 GBP) we got into the museum and firstly watched a documentary on what the place was about. We learnt about Juanita "Ice Maiden" which is the frozen body of an Inca girl. She was only discovered in 1995, after dying somtime between 1450 and 1480; she was very old and the museum was where she was kept. Unfortunately during the months of Febrary to May she is take out to have restorative work done but instead we say another young Inca girl sacrified on the mountain. The guide took us around and explained the stories behind the offerings that had been found on the mountain, along with the frozen mummys. The stories of why these young children were sacrified really interested us although it was sad to think they had to go through this. An interesting afternoon!
We decided to spend our next few days doing a trip to the Colca Canyon, looking forward to even more fantastic scenery of Peru!
