After arriving back from the Colca Canyon on Tuesday evening, we spent Wednesday just chilling before we got the night bus to Cuzco. Ash was feeling so much better thankfully and managed a pizza for lunch which was good! The bus left at 10pm so we were both pretty tired by the time we had boarded having chilled in the lounge of Cruz Del Sur (the bus company) at the bus station. We were very impressed, fingers crossed the journey would be the same and better than our first bus journey in Peru.
Unfortunately this was not the case. Ash woke me up around 1am to tell me we were stuck in snow and the bus was sliding. As I looked out the window to inspect for myself I too could see we were sliding and snow was everywhere. It was pitch black and so we couldnt tell whether we were just stuck or it was normal. Thankfully another bus came up behind us and in their headlights we could see a long line of traffic in front of us. At least we werent stranded we both thought! After trying to get some sleep we moved very little in the next few hours and to add to the drama a local woman started furiously banging on the door trying to get out. When people tried to calm her down Ash translated and told me she was shouting "We are going to die!" Just what we needed! The assistant decided everyone could do with a hot drink and so she served drinks around 3am and told us we would arrive 2 hours late into Cuzco. We were just glad to arrive in one piece!
On arriving in Cuzco at 10am the first thing we noticed was the change in temperature. Due to the increase in altitude (Cuzco is at 3400m) Cuzco was much cooler and so whilst we waited for our bed to be ready we snuggled up under the blankets and watched a film. And yes I did fall asleep! That afternoon we looked around for Spanish schools, investigated how we would get to Machu Picchu and enjoyed a big juicy burger at Jacks Cafe. Ash was definately feeling better!!
With a school in mind, a tour booked to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu for the weekend we were feeling excited about our stay in Cuzco. For those that have visited no what a magical city it is and straight away we felt relaxed and at home there. The hostel even had a cute little cat which seemed to love sitting on your knee which was great in warming you up. The hostel was great and we met some lovely people straight away so we knew the next week would be one to remember.
