Jonny's South American Adventure!
Well, I'm kinda annoyed since I was just writing this journal entry and was about to post it when th ecomputer crashed and I lost everything! So here goes again!
Well, I thought Rio was hot but Foz do Iguaçu just takes the biscuit! 41 degrees is the highest recorded temperature we have seen! No sooner have I put suncream on than it's streaming off me in murky droplets of sweat - nice! Even for two self confessed sun worshippers like myself and Karl, it's too much at times! I suppose it's better than the freezing weather I hear you have back home still!
The bus ride here to Foz do Iguaçu wasn't too bad in the end. The on eminor scare we did have was when we stopped at the Brazilian equivalent of a service station in the middle of a big storm. Outside stretching our legs, the loudest thunderclap I have ever heard was quickly followed by a huge flash of lighning that sent the whole place into darkness. There was just enough time for a couple "did you just grab my ass?" jokes before the lights came back on and we could actually see again!
The place we are staying is really nice, and is more like a mini resort than a youth hostel - complete with a pool that has been to hard to resist! For those of you aware of my geeky spreadsheet, we are bang on course at the minute - with a day less spent in Sao Paulo cancelled out by an extra day here in Foz, basically due to that pool!
We went to the Brazilian side of the falls the other day, and despite them not being at their most spectacular due to the weather, they were still a wonderful sight. Although muppet boy here forgot to charge his camera the night before and barely got to take any photos before it crashed! I had a few choice words to say to myself - but I certainly won't make the same mistake again now!
After the falls we decided to walk to the Itapiu dam - the largest in the world. The map we had suggested it was more than walkable, however by the time we saw the boarder bridge with Paraguay was still way off in the horizon, we knew it was time for a bus! After getting on the wrong one, gesticulations with a local managed to overcome an apparent chasm in terms of language, and we eventually amde it to the dam in time to catch the last coach tour - which was very impressive!
On our way back we nearly got arrested just because there is a stupid system for entering the bus station and the armed guard there thought we were trying to sneak in without paying - even though we obviously were not! All in all, an eventful day!
Got a full day trip to the Argentinian side of the falls tomorrow which I just can't wait for, since goin in from that side allows a closer look via a boat ride!
We then head into Paraguay after that, complete with mental denominantions of money, so that should be fun!
Until then, everyone take care.
Jonny
