Jonny's South American Adventure!
The first leg of the trip is now complete, and we are in Sao Paulo - the third largest city in the world (apparently!). I was slightly sad to leave Rio, we had had such a brilliant nine days and they really flew by in the end. Plus, we made some really good friends even in the short time we were there and it was a shame to have to leave all them behind. My last entry was made on our final night in Rio and at the time of writing it I fully expcted to just go bak to the hostel and have an early night. How wrong I was! In the end I was persuaded to go out to a local samba party and it turned out to be a perfect end to my time in Rio. Sat out on the jetty in Botafogo bay, having a beer in the nice warm breeze and chatting to nice people whilst the samba played away in the background was so nice. Ended up gettin to bed after 3 - which is quite early really!
The bus journey to Sao Paulo went well, though we think we ended up traveling executive class - with fully reclining seats, Billy Elliot played on the small TV's and eveything! Then the drama started in trying to find a hostel. First we got lostn before realising a hostel was marked in the wrong place on the map, then trying a hotel that had closed down - all in 30 degree heat with 20 kilos on your back is great fun. Finally, through having the crack with two attendants and a taxi driver, we reached our hostel only for it to be fully booked! So we ended up spending the first night in the worst excuse for a hotel ever, before moving into our hostel the following day, so it s all worked out OK in the end. The joys of travelling!
Friday night was one of the best so far. A few locals from the hostel were going out and we joined them for a truely authentic clubbing experience in Sao Paolo. We only left the hostel at gone midnight, as is the way here, and had a crazy taxi driver to the club where straight away I knew i would have a good night because the street outside might as well have been a catwalk! Stunner after stunner just went by, and inside the wicked music just all made for a brilliant night! And in turns out the Paulistinos (people who live in Sao Paulo) can't resist Jonny any more than the Cariocas (people from Rio) can! Pull number three already - and the girl who works at the hostel no less! To finish the night we crammed4 of us into the back of one of the gils'car - with Karl lay accross us all. All good fun.
There's not an amazing amount to do in Sao Paulo - weve just had a couple of cultural days seeing the sights, visiting museums and what not. It is a huge place - 27 million people. And it is has been given the title of the worlds most dangerous city, but thankfully we haven't encountered any problems whatsoever. In a strange way the roads are not quite as mad as in Rio (we actaully saw someone killed by a bus while we were there), but it's the size of the place that strikes you most.
We got a 16 hour bus ride tonight to Foz do Iguaçu on the Argentina border and am really looking forward to that. Havent been able to upload photos again so will have to keep you all in suspense a little longer. When I finally do load them there will be lots to see - Karl has taken to calling me David Bailey since I am a little snap happy!
Speak to you again from arguably the most stunning waterfalls on Earth!
