I feel like I've been in the ring with Mike Tyson!
I went for a blind massage today after it being recommended by several friends here including the owner of the guesthouse I stayed at and people at my gym, CrossFit. So seeing as I didn't have work today, and felt like relaxing I decided to give it a go.
So I found the place pretty easily, it's a no frills massage salon and all the masseuses are blind except for the cashier who is partially sighted. I was sitting waiting with a few Thais for a while, being the only foreigner has to be a good sign right?
Then one of the masseuses found her way over to me and directed me to a bed, she spoke a little English, asking me if I was ok from time to time (mostly I was not!!) I remember lying there thinking 'this is the most painful experience of my life and I'm paying for it'!! She found all the muscles that were tight and laid into them full force! After the hour was up I was only fit for bed and had to rest for a while! My whole body ached! What an experience!
Later in the evening I met a friend and told him about it. He reassured me that it is very painful the first few times you get a blind massage but it's worth it. It must be true: he's been for about ten! He gave me the name of the master masseuse there and told me to book him next time. I'll think about it, depending on whether my body recovers from round one!
I read this on the Internet afterwards:
"The strength applied during a blind massage can be more intense than what you might have previously experienced from the average therapist. Just remember the all important Thai phrases “Jep”, the Thai word for "pain;"and "Bao-bao" meaning "softer”. They could prove essential. It is also a well know fact that the blind have a more acute sense of touch, memory and hearing which in some cases enhances their ability to heal and could also account for the notably stronger workout they offer customers."
I guess I'll know for next time...if there is a next time!
