Life in Burma is a lot different to Thailand, it's like stepping back into the 1950s! People cycling around on bicycles, wearing traditional clothes, driving trishaws and horse drawn carts, it reminds me a little of Africa with all the huts and markets. That's one side of it; and then there's the rich families who attend schools like ours, drive jeeps, pay huge tuition fees, eat at fancy western cafes, own iPods, iPads etc! There's a class divide like nothing I've ever seen before. We have power cuts several times a day but luckily our hotel and school both have generators so we're only ever without power for a few minutes before the generator kicks in. At the hotel we reckon they rely on the generator for 50 percent of the day between all the power cuts.
I'm teaching a kindergarten class at an international school where all the kids are Burmese but speak english at school. Ive only 12 kids in my class and I've 4 teaching assistants in the classroom! I teach from 9-1:00, nice short day! Every classroom has an interactive Whiteboard and loads of resources, very rich school. There's 12 other new teachers here and we all have our own rooms at a nearby hotel with AC, fridge and tv, and a nice outdoor pool. Huge buffet breakfast is included and lunch is provided at the school. Great benefits to this job, really landed on my feet here! They transport us to and from school by mini bus, although it's only a 7 min walk away, the heat is unbearable. We're here during the hottest months, it reaches 45 degrees most days and only drops to 30 at night!
