Wartburg Castle. Just over an hour from Erfurt and looking over Eisenach, the town where Luther went to school. Wartburg was where Luther hid for a year, (from May 4 1521),while a declared outlaw. Frederick the Wise sponsored this hiding while Charles 5 and the pope has left him without protection. Here he translated the New Testament into German (in 3 months), a crucial part of the reformation, giving all people access to God's Word, as well as completing numerous other writings. He came out from hiding to deal with the iconoclast movement.
