Some of the most satisfaction I get from travelling are the journeys on public transport, there are always dramas or comedy moments and some of the transportation means are hilarious. This is when you really have to rough it just like everyone else, no first class buses or special treatment, if you want a seat you'll sometimes have to fight for it...
So... trying to get on the bus from Essaioura we had our first comedy moment, we'd paid the luggage guy to look after our bags, but no sonner had he put them under the bus did a guy come and throw them out yelling something in Arabic... not sure what was happening we stood and watched these guys fight over our bags for about 15 minutes, finally the shouting stoped and the bags went back on the bus.
The bus was in a pretty bad state, windows wouldn't open and it was infested with cockroaches - falling apart is an understatement... we knew we were in for an exciting ride. It must have been 30+ degrees in the bus, I had fan but that only helped circulate the hot air. As soon as we were out of Essaioura the driver put his foot down, hand firmly on the horn - we must have been travelling at least 120km... a pretty frightening experience. At one point he was going so fast he missed people flagging the bus down, he then reversed about 1km down the road to collect them. All the while though poor old Ant was sick as a dog, he'd been up since 2am sitting on the loo, he was pretty dosed up on immodium, but not knowing where his next toilet stop was pretty stressful. 3 long hours later we arrived at Oualidia.
Anyway the bus trip in the end was worth it. Oualidia is fantastic, the town overlooks a lagoon on the Atlantic coast, it is just gorgeous. There are only a handful of restaurants and hotels, almost no other tourists and... best of all there are no kitsch tourist shops.
There really isn't anything to do here other than sit on the beach and swim in the crystal clear lagoon, also - we've not done it yet - in the evening the fisherman cook their catch of the day on the beach to share (of course for a small fee)... this place is awesome!!
If only we had realised how cool this place was we would have come for longer, sadly though we've only been able to stay for 2 nights as we fly out of Casablanca on Wednesday - sigh.
Ant thankfully is on the mend, seems that he had a 24 hour bug - a bloody awful bug at that. Hopefully tonight we can celebrate his postponed birthday!!
Tomrrow we have an early start 7am bus to Casablanca... hopefully our next bus trip won't be as hair-raising.
