On our last night in Oualidia the heavens opened and there was a wicked thunder storm for the whole evening. We met a cool Belgium couple earlier in the day and ended up having dinner with them, watching the thunderstorm and spending hours laughing about our time in Morocco - from touts, to dodgy taxi drivers, to interesting journeys... it was such a shame that we met them on our last night in Oualidia, but isn that always the way!!
The next morning it was an early start for Casablanca (6.30am to be precise), the trip was really uneventful - our first since arriving in Morocco - and I was able to sleep for the 4 hours it took us to get to Casablanca.
Coming from the tranquility of Oualidia it was a shame that we had to end our trip in such a chaotic city. Pollution, hundreds of cars honking horns, people on every corner, this place is just a hive of activity.
There isn much to say about Casablanca, its just another big city and not really asthetically pleasing, aside of course for the Hassan II Mosque which is unbelievably breathtaking, it is the largest mosque in Morocco and third largest in the world, At a distance it doesn't appear to be that big, but the closer you get to it the true scale of its enormity become apparent. Standing underneath the doors, you feel like a tiny insect... now I kind of know what it might feel like to be an ant.
Our exit from the country was.. interesting, at Casablanca airport going through security an immigration officer smiled and whispered to me "No hashish, do you?", unsure I heard right I asked again - yup, she had just said what I thought. I just smiled and shook my head, like I would try to take hashish out of Morocco - I dont want to spend the rest of my life rotting in some prison cell in Morocco - not even Im that stupid!!
You are not permitted to take currency out of the country so with our last 60 dirham we shouted ourselves one last tagine and msemmen (Moroccan crepe) and mentally prepared ourselves for the next 10 hours we would spend airports.
Morocco is definitely a place I would recommend anyone to travel, a country so enchanting and with such warm and friend people (well most of them), Marrakesh with its medinas and labryinths where you can loose yourself for hours - literally. Essaouira with its fresh fish and nothing other to do than relax, Oualidia being so untouched by tourism with some of the most beautiful sunsets Ive seen. And, finally Casablanca though just another big city, its amazing mosque. I wish that we'd had more time to explore other parts of the country, I know though that we will be back here... someday.
In 2 days we will commence our pilgrim trek to Santiago de Compostela, I think we are both feeling a bit under prepared but Im sure it will be fine... it has to be, as we are walking approx 300km.
