Part 2 of our Icelandic adventures took us off the beaten track a bit to a remote log cabin for 3 nights of proper relaxation (and very well-earned after our snow-storm driving experience, but more on that later).
We picked up our hire car in pre-sunrise darkness at 10am on Tuesday in Reykjavik and headed south for a relaxing spa session at the famous Blue Lagoon. After a solid few hours in the geothermally-heated waters we hopped back in the car and began our journey east to our log cabin. Unfortunately, shortly after leaving the Blue Lagoon we were hit by an epic snow storm (by our standards, though apparently just a normal winter day for Icelanders) which reduced our visibility to no more than a few metres with the road entirely covered in snow and the world around us reduced to a white world of sideways snow. After a very stressful hour of 30km/hr driving in a 90km/hr road and guessing where the road was, we pulled into the first town we could find and went into the local petrol station for some weather news. It was there that we were very lucky to meet one of the many extremely generous locals who gave us some great support and words of encouragement for getting back on the horse so to speak and continuing on our journey. Another careful hour later we finally arrived at our log cabin in 4:30pm darkness and proceeded to; be unable to find the keys, bog the car twice and not find the wood for the fire! Eventually we settled in and got ourselves comfortable.
From then on we had a great time enjoying the hot tub in the snow with Verve champagne, watching movies, eating good food and chilling. We also headed off one day for a snow mobiling adventure and another day to see an amazing, natural Geyser (check out our photos!). Friday we departed for the airport via a couple of short stops and found ourselves ready to fly to New York City for Christmas and New Years!
