It was still about 500km to get to Blantyre and we wanted to explore Nkhata Bay a little. We didn't know of anything worthwhile to go to after Salima and Zomba or Liwonde would be too far so we opted to head for our first stop in Malawi, Cool Runnings in Senga Bay.
The backpackers was on the northern corner of Nkhata Bay and directly opposite was where the snorkelling was best, so we'd heard. We swam across the channel and enjoyed the fresh water and the exercise. The fish around the rocks were the same variety of small fish we'd found everywhere along the lake. Although Lake Malawi has more species than any other and many are endemic and unique to it, the marine life of Memba Atoll is far more interesting to us with the range from dolphins to coral with starfish and eels - we really have been spoilt!
Nonetheless, Nkhata bay is another cove of paradise along the lakeshore. We were glad to visit it and enjoyed swimming in the more protected bay but is doesn't have the beaches of Chinteche (Kande Beach) or the clear waters and the fish of Cape Maclear. After this morning's exercise we were on the road at 11:30. With the wifi there we got to speak to Chris and Doug in Dubai as well, feeling very far away from all the action and the birth of our little niece!
We drove the same road we had before without anything to report all the way to Cool Runnings. The main thing we did was stop at the curio sellers so that Ant could get his "mini-Chipolopolo" model car fixed after it had been thrown around the back of car for a while.
In Senga Bay we went for a walk down the beach and then the highlight was definitely the pizza we made in our little Dutch oven on the braai! We made some dough and with some left over pasta sauce and various ingredients we crafted two awesome little pizzas. We also made brownies but got full and bored and overcooked them but it was the pizza that made our evening!
