6/3 continued our journey down the east coast highway which cuts through dense eucolypt forests and past stunning golden beaches - mostly devoid of people. There are some interesting towns along this coast, mainly based around recreational sea fishing. Fish are apparently plentiful in the seas and inlets and we saw many small boats being trailed behind cars as men(mainly) loaded up with all the necessities (beer) for a day out on the sea. One town, Bermagui, was especially picturesque and we bought some locally caught cooked prawns to eat later. After a 200 km drive we arrived at Eden, originally a whaling station but now a thriving commercial fishing port which also welcomes the odd cruise liner as it has a very deep harbour. We were staying at a pretty cottage resort just outside the town and on its own little beach with a harbour for small boats. The next day there was a fishing competition and we happened to be there when the winning catch, a 108 kilo marlin was brought in for weighing. This and other fish were later cut up into steaks and there was so much that when the competition participants had what they wanted the rest was being given away. We had marlin ( swordfish) steaks that evening! The remains were fed to the resident seal and many pelicans and gulls in the little harbour. We stayed here for two nights and then continued our road trip around the coast and over the state border back into Victoria.
