Anish's Travels
Day 52,53,554,55 (1/05 - 4/05)
Arrived in Siem Reap in the evening of the 1st May, after a 6 hour bus journey.
For the nest 3 days we explored the Hindu and Buddist temples of Angkor. The temples are spread out over 40 miles and built between the 8th and 13th centuries.
The first days we explored them on as electric bike, and the second day on a tuk-tuk. The temples were an amazing site, by far the best non-scenic site i have seen, although i was all templed out by the end of the second day..had had enough of them. Some of them are huge complexes and take like an hour to work around, but the architecture and intricate carvings and brilliant. The carvings are everywhere, and you just wonder how long it took to build these temples. And they are made of huge bricks and you wonder how they lifted them to such heights, without modern day machines. The most impressve one were Angkor Wat, Angor Thom (where tomb raider was filmed) and a big square one which i dont remember the name of. A lot of the temples have collapsed due to the jungle taking over. Mainly tree roots have caused temples to become ruins, with piles of bricks surrounding partially collapsed structures. However, they have been gradually restored to what the once were, with the addition of structural supports. Dont want a wall of bricks falling on you now do we. Requires a lot of effort to climb some of the taller temples as well, because the steps are a lot larger than human foot step. You have to pull your self up on some of them. On going down is trecherous, because some of the steps are very now. You have to go down sideways. Similar trekking down hills in Chaing Mai. And the locals really do understand how heavy dollar bills are, because they are always willing to take them off of us. We were constantly approached, well actually shouted at from across the road, by people wanting to sell us stuff or telling us to eat at there place because they have all the best food, even though every adjacent place to eat had exactly the same menu, and were all tryna bribe us by saying they would knock a dollar of the menu prices. There were a lot of beggers around aswell (especilly in the town we were staying), and at some of the temples, there were a lot of kids around tryna to sell us stuff like books and bracelts, and they are like the cutest kids you'll ever see. A gruop of them even follwed us through the temple, that was rather fun. We didnt actually get a chance to see the temple properly. One little girl followed me through trying to sell me 15 braclets for a dollar (well they were more like bangles), and i didnt want them, so i started hiding from her in the temple, to no success though. Anyways, she gave me one for free, and then wouldnt take it back, and i felt bad and couldnt take it for free, so i gave her some money. Emotional bribery, i hate it, lol.
Tomorrow (the 5th) i heading back to Bangkok. An 11 hour journey. ( i should mention that these bus journeys do have multiple rest stops)
I will upload photos when im back in Bangkok, where the computers are better.
P.S the next entry will be in the Thailand link under "Bangkok (2nd time)
