Having finally come within two feet of a snake we have now added koalas to our wildlife 'to see' list. Not that they looked particularly alive, rather stoned out their heads.
We had gone to Yanchep National Park with Laura and Jamie whilst back staying with them in Fremantle. It's an hours drive north and we all went in our car as it has an annual Western Australia National Park pass that the previous owners had bought.
We cleared out the extra spare tyre/books/backpacks etc from the rear seats to fit us all in and in the process gave the car a good clean and hoover inside.
The koalas at Yanchep are in a fairly small area with a board walk winding through the trees. This makes them more accessible than most places and we soon started spotting them clinging on to the tree trunks or curled up. They look like big grey fur balls and the eucalyptus leaves they eat make them dopey so they spend a lot of the day looking like a stuffed animal. I'm sure the ranger just comes round every so often and moves them round!
It was great to see koalas for the first time, and we had a relaxing walk around the lake in the park, but the highlight of the day were the kangaroos. We've seen many before and every time they provide us with great entertainment.
These were of the western grey variety and I saw one with a baby in its pouch. As I went over to get a closer look I stumbled across another one taking shade under a bush with the legs of a joey visible. They were obviously very used to people as it let me get within a few feet. I crouched down and took loads of photos and then the joey stuck his head out so I continued to click away and managed to get a video before some noisy people came by and the mother hopped away.
