We're in the South East corner of the country, pootling around the coast road. We crossed the border from Victoria into New South Wales and had earmarked three holiday towns to stop at and have a look round - Eden, Narooma and Batemans Bay.
Eden is an old whaling station set on a picturesque bay. We took a walk along the beach road and also went to Benn Boyd National Park to see the cliff which is half red and half white sandstone. We stayed overnight at the apply named Garden of Eden campsite, which was one of the best we have come across.
Further up the coast is Narooma. This place had a very English feel with its tiny marina of fishing boats. It would be an ideal place to stay for keen fishermen as you can hire 'tinnies' (metal boats) and kayaks and venture out into the inlet. In spring migrating whales pass the shores, but as we aren't fishermen and its not spring we just stayed for lunch and took a wander down to the sea to view another of the towns attractions, Australia Rock. This is a hole in a rock that is shaped like Australia - well it sort of does if you squint a bit and ignore Tasmania exists!
Since spending so much time in Western Australia we are still getting used to the closeness of towns of the east. We carried on to Batemans Bay which was far less attractive than the previous two towns and even less so when the woman in the tourist information said the campsites would be $40+ a night - double what we'd paid the previous nights. It was still only mid afternoon and not being suitably impressed we decided to leave 'Robin Hood Bay' and drove on to Canberra.
