Crabs, Curry & Cambodian (Beer)
We got a driver of a tuk-tuk to take us to the nearby town of Kep, he suggested he took his car as the road wasn't great for a tuk tuk. I think it was much more enjoyable doing it that way (also strange to be on 4 wheels again).
Kep is known for it crab markets, It was a hub of activity. Wooden crab cages being emptied along with lots of other stores selling live, cooked and dried fish, fresh fruits and some other bits.
We got taken down to the beach area of the town, it was man made and the sand was brought down from Kampot. There is a statue of a woman close by that is said to be looking over towards the island of Phu Quoc that I've mentioned a few times, as if she is waiting for the day it is returned to Cambodian control. I don't think this is what I found when looking at it. The body position just seemed to point to the other side of the bay rather than out to the island.
Further down the seafront we got to a giant crab statue that was about 50 meters from the shore. It had an additional sign on it that said "Kep Kep clean 2014", I don't know if that was meant to be a joke or a mistake.
We hid from the sun for a bit in a french cafe before dipping our feet in the water. Not the clearest sea we have seen on our trip but it had been a couple of weeks since seeing the sea, so it ended up being quite good.
Lunchtime came and we got to try some crab back down near the market. I've not had a fresh crab in front of me before (but had it dressed or the soft shell variety). I think I made more of a mess than actually eating it, Tash seemed to get the hang of it better (getting the meat from the claws). I found it all a bit annoying, I could have done with an instruction manual!
Back in Kampot we returned back to Epic Arts to buy some gifts. I brought the T shirt I mentioned previously, and a handicap monster toy that I will give to my nephew when I get home.
Dinner was back at the same restaurant from the night before, and we had some more ice-cream from the shop that the passion fruit sorbet came from a few days ago. I was surprised that Tash wanted to go and get some Cambodian beer (every so often she finds beer that she likes), although I couldn't persuade her to have more than one so packing was a little easier than it could have been!
