Penang and Langkwai
3-10th Jan,
I made my way from Thailand into Malaysia, picking up another stamp in the passport - looking good now although I was sat next to this prat who was on his mobile for the whole journey! I made straight for Penang, an Island off the mainland. I arrived fairly late on the Saturday night and found a nice guesthouse with a 24-hour bar, so settled there for the night. The next day, I wandered round town - I was staying in china town, but the next street along was Little India, where I managed to pick up my favourite Bollywood film on a dodgy DVD! It's easy to walk around town and wander off to the harbour to get a breeze. I had a curry off the street vendors, which was lovely and then wandered off to some of the tourist pubs, going in to the London Pub. I met a couple of pretty cool Aussi lads in there and we had a night drinking Guinness!!
The next day I headed off to an Island off Penang called Langkwai, which I'd heard was expensive, but did like the look of it. Anyway, turned out be one of the best places I've been to. I stayed in a dorm and met loads of really cool people. When I first got there, there were 2 Aussi girls from Perth and a young guy from Canada who was a bit of a nob but harmless. We spent the day down on the beach (which was a lovely beach) and then the evening drinking cans down on the beach! It's duty-free, so cheap cans! We then headed to a club - it was supposed to have a dress code of no flip-flops, but as that's all I had I managed to blag it in! The club was very funny - there was this dodgy band playing really funny music, but I did get to meet them afterwards! We were the only westerners there and stood out for fun! The next few days were with the same friends I'd made and also this lad from Kent - he was pretty daft! He went out looking for a pizza and came back with a silly fish tattooed on his foot! There was also this Italian girl with a French accent who told us at the beach she never burns, but ended up red-raw, telling us she was going to wee on herself to make it better! I told her that was for jellyfish stings and she'd be better off with after-sun!
So the days were spent on the beach and the evenings spent chilling on the beach with a few beers. Oh and we beat the Aussi girls at beach cricket!
So I had a really good time and did not spend much! Off to Cameroon High Lands tomorrow....
