We woke up at around 6:30 and were soon up for breakfast which consisted of biscuits and crackers with a massive pot of coffee made once again over the fire. Once satisfied we then took the hammocks down and gathered our stuff together before proceeding off on our jungle trek. We were walking for almost 2 hours through the dense undergrowth while Mutante pointed out all the different species of trees and told us about their uses. (preventing malaria, starting fires, etc) He also found some Brazil nuts for us to try, although Mae decided to give her's to me as she dosen't like nuts. When we arrived at a particular tree which is used by the natives to make ropes with which they hang their hammocks, he proceeded to make us both a little bracelet with it and also fashioned a water bottle carrier (we had left ours back in Manaus) We also came across a tree which had a waxy substance on the bark, Mutante said that this was similar to incense and could be also be used as a fire lighter. He proceeded to burn a bit and we were both quite surprised at how hot the resulting flame was, we also smelled the smoke and true enough it was amazingly sweet!! He also managed to find a hanging vine from which we could swing in order to get the obvious 'Tarzan' pictures. About halfway round our walk we suddenly stopped as there were 2 groups of monkeys in the trees close by, one group of howler monkeys whose noise we had been hearing for most of the morning it is so loud and one group of smaller brown monkeys for which he didn't know the English name. Further on after clambering over a fallen tree which allowed us to cross a small stream we were stopped once more to look at a small creature in the distance which Mae initially though was some kind of deer but apparently was some kind of pig (she only saw the tail!). We arrived back at the camp around 10 o'clock and quickly packed up our stuff in to the boat, both of us had immensely enjoyed our jungle trek but were eager to escape the mosquitoes by now!! The ride back to the lodge took an hour or so and while we waited for lunch I went to put the camera battery on charge while Mae watched as Mutante fashioned her a hairpin from a lump of wood he had picked up using his machete (which he uses for everything!!) Lunch was chicken today and we stuffed ourselves with as much as possible hoping that we then woudn't have to buy much for dinner that evening. After lunch we went for a swim in the river which is quite pleasantly warm, if not so pleasantly coloured and it was soon time to head back to Manaus. We boarded a much faster speed boat for the trip back and enjoyed a thrilling ride back to the village where we could catch the bus, especially when he decided to take short cut through the forest and zoomed about like a motorbike leaning the corners! We travelled back to the office the same way we had come, except we caught a much faster boat across the river, not stopping to look at the meeting of the water on this leg. We arrived back at 2ish and spent the afternoon showering, washing clothes and catching up with blogs. In the evening we went out with Mutante to a small cafe in the main square, which contained the impressive if faintly cake-like opera house, as well as many colourful buildings. We were slightly reminded of the rather impressive square in Havana where we had sat for beer towers on a couple of occasions. We had a beer each and a burger (with egg bacon and cheese) and chatted together for a couple of hours before walking back to the hostel and going to bed.
