Leaving Buenos Aires
We woke up to the sound of rain and as we came out of our dorm found that the furniture in the common area had all been moved to the edges as the roof leaks quite significantly! So we had breakfast in the semi dry and then got our bags packed ready to go, we checked out at 10.30 as we were supposed to but hung around for another 2 hours before deciding to head off to the airport. Our flight was at 6.15 so even 12.30 may seem early to be leaving but we wanted to take the bus which takes 2 hours to get there but which was going to cost 2 pesos each instead of a taxi which would be 170!! So, we walked in the rain, which thankfully wasnt too heavy, to the bus stop and waited, and waited, and waited!! The bus we wanted was the number 8 but apparently not all number 8's are the same and we had to look out for one that said 'aeropuerto' on it. Well, they all said it but when we asked before getting on, they all said they weren't going there!! Very confused, cold, damp and getting more and more frustrated we agreed that if the 'correct' bus hadnt come along by 2pm then we'd have to get a taxi or be late for our flight. Luckily a german man came to join us at the stop and as he had luggage we asked if he was also going to the airport, he was and after telling him our woes he said not to worry, that the buses are like that here and he was sure one would be along soon. 15 minutes later and it turned up, we got on and went to pay the driver who refused to take our 5 peso note, insisting that you had to pay with coins which we didnt have (no one has in fact as they are all on the bloody buses and the whole city struggles because of it!), we refused to get off the bus after waiting so long and firmly plonked ourselves down in a seat with defiant stares at the driver! Kindly the german guy paid for us with his bus card and we gave him the money and then we sat squashed with our bags for two hours on the cold draughty, ridiculously packed bus that wound its way through the streets of Buenos Aires showing us some very different areas to what we had seen on foot (the less 'touristy/well off' areas!) before thankfully arriving at the airport where we got off. After finding the right terminal we then spent the next 2 hours in queues going through several customs checks before gratefully getting on the plane and sitting down to relax as we made the 5 hour flight to Lima arriving at 9pm due to the 2 hour time difference. After walking around the airport to stretch our legs we made disgusted remarks about the prices of everything which were incredibly high (they were selling the same t-shirt I bough in Peru for 3 times what I paid), more then you'd even pay in Heathrow, before finally settling down to sleep on some chairs in the slightly warmer middle section of the terminal.
