Gone walkabout
Hey There,
Well we are here in Tupiza, Bolivia. Wearing all our clothes trying to keep warm. Noone here has ever been so cold. The sun is bright but weak and the temperature which hovers around zero in the day, plummets when the sun goes down. We have spent the last 3 days in a 4x4 jeep truckig across the salt flats - there is 1 highway in Bolivia apparently and we have been nowhere near it. Even the rough roads have been avoided. Our first night on tour was spent at 4800m above sea level and everyone was feeling a little weird with the altitude - headaches dizzy etc plus the temperature outside was approaching -20oC and there was no heating again. I seem to have gotten a reputation for pushing coca leaves and coca tea. It is like chewing a mouthful of bay leaves but does the trick.
We have seen some amazing sights, mountains red lakes, green lakes, white lakes, icy lakes, flamingoes etc. We spent our 2nd night on the worlds biggest salt lake, in a hotel where everything was made of salt - tables chairs, beds, walls, floors etc. Pretty christmassy really, as its all snow white.
We arrived in Uyuni with 12 of the 15 in our group suffering from food poisoning. We visited f¡sh island - a tiny island with massive cacti in the middle of Salar de Uyuni - 12,500 sqkm of ice white salt flats.
We hope to get out of Uyuni as soon as possible as it is so cold, but our train is cancelled due to civil unrest further up the line. I made my first joke with a local in spanish asking if it was another revolution. She laughed and said it was only a little problem, so not sure if I was right or not.
We manage to get on a rickety, overcrowded smelly bus towards the border with Argentina, about 150km over 10 hours. We broke down twice in the first hour and there was not one road the whole way, we were going through salt flats, down river beds and barely up and down the mountains. It was a bit cold still but certainly up there with the crazy travelling experiences in Asia.
Looking forward to warmth like never before and some decent food when we get out of the altitude and get our appetites back.
Adios amigoes.
Andy and Rachel
