Today we left Turangi (alive!) and headed for Napier. To get there we had to drive back up the side of Lake Taupo to the town of Taupo. In the supermarket in Taupo there a sign on the aisle that said "Manchester". This pleased Andrea, but we couldn't work out why it was there or what products it related to...
After the shopping we thought we'd take in one final thermal area; the Craters of the Moon north of Taupo. This thermal area appeared as a result of the Wairakei Geothermal power plant, which produces electricity from natural steam. The power plant lowered the water pressure, causing it to boil more intensely and create new mud polls and steam vents. It was beautifully sunny as we walked around the park seeing the sites. Whilst not a huge place, it was really good seeing more of the Earth's power on display.
From Craters of the Moon we drove to Napier and booked ourselves into the Top 10 holiday park there. Had a lazy afternoon and evening; we needed to recover from the Tongariro Crossing!
