We headed out of Franz Josef towards Queenstown. We wanted to have a quick look at Fox Glacier, but a sign on the road said it was unsuitable for campervans so we decided to drive on.
After a fairly long drive our first stop later that afternoon was Puzzling World, just outside Wanaka. We amused ourselves with the optical illusions which were on the walls. There were some very impressive holograms, which were different depending on which direction they were viewed from. There was a room full of faces where the whole face appeared to follow you around the room, not just the eyes. We were filmed in a room which makes you look really short in one corner and really tall in the other. They apparently used tricks like these in some of the hobbit scenes in the Lord of the Rings films. Then we went into a room where the floor was at such and angle as to make very strange things occur. It felt a little like the room was moving at first. You could place a snooker ball on a pool table which looked as though it angled upwards, but the ball seemed to roll up the hill. There was a chair which you could sit in which appeared to glide up hill...
The other attraction here is a large maze to walk around. You start off somewhere in the middle and the aim is to get to each of the four corners before returning to near the starting point to get to the finish. There are stairs and bridges which go up and across large sections of the maze. Sometimes you could trace out the route from up the stairs, but then you've got to memorize it and often the route would lead under the stairs so we couldn't see that it was a dead end under there. We managed to complete the maze in 45 minutes, which we were pleased with as it says it usually takes between 30-60 minutes.
After we'd finished with Puzzling World, we decided to head into the centre of Wanaka to book our Queenstown activities, as we didn't think we'd get to Queenstown in time to book them. The visitor centre in Wanaka is located right next to Lake Wanaka and the staff have an amazing view of the lake and the boats on it. Without any trouble we booked ourselves spaces to go hang gliding, 'Frogz' (basically throwing yourself down a river on a sledge), and a Maori evening with traditional tribal dances and food. And that was all for the next day!
We arrived in Queenstown a little while later and found our campsite for the evening. It proudly claimed to be the world's first environmentally certified campsite. There were quite a few ingeniously reused objects dotted around which had become flower pots etc.
We spent our evening using up one of our vouchers which entitled us to a "huge" pizza (to share), a beer each and an hours pool for $25 (about 10 GBP). We sank a few more beers whilst Andrea narrowly beat Andy at pool winning 3-2.
