After checking out of our hostel we met Grant's brother, Aaron who had kindly agreed to put us up for the rest of the week. We were really thankful for this - some space to sort ourselves out before we head to Asia and being able to save money by not having to be in a hostel! We spent most of this day sorting ourselves out and doing jobs like washing and checking budgets etc. We did go for a wander into and around the city centre which was nice, pretty small but none the less a nice place. It was just so hot and humid, the humidity is a lot worse than the heat, and you don't have to do much before you start sweating. In the evening Aaron invited us to join his weekly pub quiz team in a local pub. This was great fun - I managed to chip in with some answers that they wouldn't have got - it turns out we won by half a point so we were all happy, especially Aaron, who had come second by half a point the previous week!
Wednesday we decided to hire a bike and borrow Aaron's to go and explore some of the other bays situated around Darwin. We headed out north to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory; this was a great little museum especially because of the free admission. It has a few great exhibitions, one about Cyclone Tracy which leveled Darwin on Christmas Day in 1974 and a lot of stuffed animals including a 5.5m crocodile called Sweetheart who was HUGE!! He'd been attacking fishing boat motors so needed to be relocated; unfortunately he died during his capture so they donated him to the museum as a permanent reminder.
We grabbed some Barra and Chips (Barramundi fish is lovely) at the shops in Fannie Bay, yes it is a ridiculous name for a bay! We continued on the cycle track along the bay to East Point Reserve for some great views over Fannie bay and other areas. The sea was a beautiful turquoise colour. By the time we got to East Point Sarah was a little grumpy complaining that her bike was no good and that she had to work really hard to keep up with me.I had tried to swap before this point but she wouldn't let me! Anyways I made her swap bikes and the changes between Aaron's nice bike and the crappy one we hired was unreal after 100m I was knackered, especially when I was trying to keep up with Sarah! It really hit me on a small hill on the way home, I was soaked through with sweat and puffing hard, but at least I made it. Of course Sarah made it easily on the nice bike, that's the last time I offer to swap when I get the better deal to start with, at least she was happy again now watching me struggle!!
That evening there was a bit of a party and BBQ at Aaron's place, Austalia were kicking off their World Cup Qualification against Qatar, they easily won 3-0. I couldn't help myself from making sarcastic comments about Qatar being tough opponents with the hotbed of talent they keep producing!! Anyway we had a great BBQ and a fair few drinks. Although it was to bed relatively early for Sarah and me as we had hired a car to go on a road trip first thing on Thursday, you'll have to read the next blog to find out how it went!!
Ciao for now, A&Sxxxx
