Driving to Taupo the weather was nice and the forecast for the next few days wasn't great.Andrew kept saying that we may have to do the skydive today but I was not so sure about that!
On arriving in Taupo we headed straight for the airport to compare prices and try and get a skydive booked for tomorrow. In the one company Skydive Taupo we were told that there was a plane going up with spaces in an hours time, our pulses definitely quickened on hearing this news and Andrew started chain smoking!!At least we did not have much time to think about it! After checking the budget we decided to splash out and go the whole-hog and do a 15,00ft jump with a dvd, photos and a t-shirt, this is likely to be a once in a lifetime thing!
Within the hour we were kitted up in overalls, lifejacket (in case we landed in the lake!!), harness, hat, goggles and gloves! I was jumping with a Polish guy called Ollie and Andrew was jumping with a guy called Eric the Viking! The were all very professional and knew exactly what they were doing as they kitted us up, gave us a bit of a talk and started filming our DVDs.
There were about 10 people jumping, so 20 of us all squeezed into the plane, we got very close to our buddies that's for sure! Up we went and had some beautiful views of the lake and surrounding area. There were some people jumping at 12,000ft, watching them go was crazy, they were sucked out of the plane so fast and gone! That made us pretty nervous and as the plane went higher, I began to wonder why we had decided to jump from such a height. The air in the plane became noticeably thinner. It is crazy to think though that in Bolivia we were standing at 15,000ft several times!!
Andrew was first to go, that was the worst watching him jump, or rather fall out of the plane! Then it was my turn. You get sat right on the door and have to tuck your legs under the plane, hold onto your harness and put your head back onto your buddy (like a banana!) Then you go!!No choice in it and I think it is possibly one of the scariest moments of my life! The freefall is incredible, we were freefalling for about a minute at a speed of 135mph!! It is so hard to breathe and your cheeks are flapping about!
Then the guy opens the parachute and you get a chance to breathe and take in the scenery around, which was truly spectacular, we were coming down about 5pm so the sun was just starting to set over the lake - AMAZING!
Coming to land with a bump and there was Andrew just in front of me! He had absolutely loved it and had his tongue stuck out half the way down and was pretending to fly for the other half!!I was completely lost for words at how amazing it was, what an experience!
The photos were great but our DVDs even better!I don't stop grinning the whole time and Andrew acts the fool in his DVD as per usual. But they are wicked and we can't wait to show everyone at home!
We rounded the day off by watching the sunset over Lake Taupo and finishing off a bottle of gin! All in all we agreed that this had probably been one of the best days of our lives!!! If Carlsberg made great days this would be one of them!!!
Lots of Love
