We headed even further south from Dunedin towards the Catlins, an area of unspoilt isolated forests with great opportunities to see wildlife. We reached a place called Nugget Point, so called as the rocks just off the land bear a very slight resemblance to gold nuggets! We got drenched walking to the lighthouse and back, the views were worth it though.
The next bay along the coastline is called Roaring Bay, we arrived just before dusk to try to get a glimpse of the rare Hoiho the yellow eyed penguin - they are really rare, only 3000 of them left in the wild. On the way to the hide we got a glimpse of one on the beach so rushed on, we didn't need to during the next hour or so we saw a total of 7 Hoiho and 1 common blue penguin.
We camped by the Purakaunui Falls and woke to some unbelievable rain that didn't stop for a good hour. We had a quick walk around the falls before heading off to see the Matai Falls and Lake Wilkie, which were also quite nice. After having lunch at porpoise bay, where the waves were huge crashing against the rocks, we continued to see a 160 million year old fossilised forest that is exposed at low tide, this was pretty cool, rocks that look like trees and wood!
A quick jaunt to Bluff followed, Bluff is one of NZs oldest continually inhabited places. It had 2 major sights, a big signpost at its southerly point and a great lookout on top of a hill. We would of liked to go to Stewart Island for a few days, which you can get to from Bluff, but time and money constraints prevented us!We have now been to the most northern point and the most southern point in NZ though!
We arrived in Invercagill on Saturday evening hoping to find somewhere to watch the England v Oz rugby game. Unfortunately no one was showing it so instead we had breakfast and beers early Sunday to watch All Blacks v France. These matches resulted in 2 major upsets (one due to some dodgy refereeing decisions, that the Kiwis are not too happy about!!), we were gutted for the All Blacks since we didn't expect England to get this far we were supporting them too and they are so passionate about rugby in NZ the country is now in mourning! However, can't complain too much, we are still World Champions, COME ON ENGLAND!!!! Hopefully we can find somewhere to watch this next week but it will be unlikely, especially now!
Hopefully we are going to Milford Sound next, if the road re-opens, it has been shut for a few days because of avalanche risks. It is meant to be beautiful though, we can't wait.
Keep in touch everybody.
Love A&S xx
