The Peruvians like to queue ..... A LOT! Well over an hour before we were due to fly they'd formed a queue at the boarding gate and it was pointless as they boarded us by seat number, they also have a ridiculous amount of luggage.
The flight was fine, we both slept for most of it and then when we got off that's when the queuing went to a whole new level. Imagine the luggage carousel with every family member each with a trolley right up to the edge of the belt. You couldn't even get to your bags without climbing over a trolley or a body. I left this task to Casson and sat back and watched what can only be described as carnage/comedy gold!
As it was New Years Eve we just went out for a wander in the afternoon, had a bite to eat in the evening then came back for a power nap as there was a party in our hostel that night. At 8pm we set our alarm for 9.30pm but actually woke up at 11.20pm, just enough time to go upstairs grab a beer and see the New Year in with a few fireworks. The party was in full swing and as the soberest people there we finished our beers and went straight back to bed!
There wasn't a lot open on New Years day so we joined a tour going from our hostel to old Lima which was really nice, some really beautiful old buildings and we went to some catacombs which were pretty cool. Casson's wrist almost dropped off as I'd made him wrap the camera strap around it so many times, I think I need to relax my paranoia that everyone is a potential mugger! That night we treated ourselves to a massive mixed grill, we definitely ate marinated heart on skewers (which were really good) and we sampled something unidentifiable which may have been anything from Guinea pig to kidney! The rest of it was normal and we demolished it!
On the 2nd it was Casson's birthday and since Madrid he'd been looking for a selfie stick, little did he know i'd brought one with me as his birthday present so he was made up with it (and has driven me mad with it ever since, every time I turn around it´s in my face).
We went to Huaca Pullcana which are ancient pyramid ruins within the district of Miraflores, up until 1981 they weren't a protected site so they were used as bmx tracks. After that date they became protected but not before lots of houses and commercial outlets had destroyed a lot of it which is unbelievable as they are dated back to the Wari Culture (500 AD-900 AD).
As the birthday boy is addicted to chocolate we went to a chocolate museum in the afternoon and made our own chocolate. You have to shell the beans and then grind them into a paste. This sounds easy but it's not, Casson was on a mission as he really wanted to get to the good stuff so he was the 1st in the group to make a paste but when I looked at him he was bright red and the sweat was dripping off him! It was a laugh as there were a group of us and the chocolate at the end was really good, they were individual chocolate's so we added M&M's, coconut, marshmallows and for Casson's bestie, Oreo cookies.
Lima is really touristy, especially where we were staying so neither of us really liked it so we decided to move on a little earlier than planned and head to Cusco, we're here now and absolutely love it already.
