The Gibbon Experience - woke up freezing in the hostel at 7.30am as we had to be ready for the briefing at the gibbon experience at 8am. We stopped off at the shop across the road for breakfast and snacks for the trip. In the GE office we was shown a short safety film and info about the project. We then jumped into trucks the departure point. After an hour or so in the truck we arrived in a small village, all of the laos children was waving to us and shouting 'hi'. We were given out harnesses and off we went. We had a short walk (about 5 mins) to our first zip wire. This was a practise wire, about 70-100 metres long over the river. I clipped on my safety wire followed by the main zipping contraption, and off I went. On the other side we had about a 30 min walk, most of it was uphill in the heat, so the guides made sure we had a couple of breaks. The next zip wire was a lot longer and much higher up over the jungle. It is hard to remember what I saw as you have to concentrate on not twisting, your leg position and speed. In total we zipped on about 12 wires, I lost count in the end! After many hours of walking and zipping through the jungle our group split into two and set up camp in our tree houses. On arrival they had set out snacks and drinks. The view out across the jungle was amazing and surreal. The female guides came and set up our beds, mosquito nets and brought our dinner. The shower and toilet looked out across the whole jungle, so going to the bathroom was also an experience. The sunset was great to watch too, the sun disappeared very quickly. Luckily it was a lot warmer than when we was in huay xiu! The bed was surprisingly comfy, and I had a good nights sleep apart from waking on the odd occasion when I heard an animal in the jungle. We had to wake up at about 6.30am to be ready to go out on 4 zip line at 7am. After the 4 zip lines we returned back to the tree house for breakfast. We had rice, vegetables and omelette. The Dutch boys in our group took first dibs again and took most of the omelette! After breakfast we had about 30 mins to pack up our stuff and make the most of the views before heading out again. On the last day there was about 7 zip lines. The last two zip lines were the best as they looked out onto the river. On the walks between the zip lines were some great views across the jungle. Around 1pm we arrived at the pick up point where we had a swim in the pond and some more rice! The trucks came to pick us up to take us back to huay xiu. Luckily emily and I got to sit in the front of the van as it was a very bumpy and steep ride! On the way back we passed through a large banana farm and saw trees that rubber is harvested from. On arrival at huay xiu we had some dinner before heading to the tuk tuk, which was taking us to the bus station, where we will set off for Luang Prabang.
