Tuesday 25 August.
We are up and packed with our things in storage. The sun is out. Malcolm goes to get more money out then we have breakfast. Thankfully the tube strike doesn't go ahead so we are free to use it. We decide to go to see Stonehenge. It's a few trains and a few hours to Salisbury. There it's wet and windy. I wish I had my sweater. We catch a bus that goes to the henge and gives commentary. At the information centre we get audio guides and take the shuttle to the end of the road. It's hard to get a grip on what these famous monuments should make you feel. It's a nice photo, but I feel nothing. And embarrassed and disappointed by that.
The next stop on the tour is to Old Sarum. Ruins of a castle once inhabited by kings and knights. It's bewildering trying to imagine such history in the midst of rolling farm land. The historic ness of the city and area seems unreal.
The trip back is all but uneventful, bar a defective train holding up the works for a while. We get some Chinese on the way back to the hostel. We get our things and a new room. Just two beds. Yay. But right by the toilet with the groaning pipes.
